Excel to CSV
An Excel to CSV converter reads a worksheet from an .xlsx workbook and turns its cells into a plain delimited text file. This one opens the Office Open XML ZIP entirely in your browser, supports shared strings, inline strings, numbers, booleans, sparse cells, and multiple worksheets, and never uploads the workbook or writes it to localStorage.
Updated
Drop or choose an .xlsx file, select a worksheet when the workbook has more than one, check the preview, then copy or download the CSV. Choose comma for standard CSV, tab for TSV, or semicolon for systems that expect that separator. Quotes, separators, and line breaks are escaped using RFC 4180-style double-quote rules.
This zero-dependency reader supports modern .xlsx files that use STORE or DEFLATE ZIP compression. Formula cells export the cached result saved by the spreadsheet app, and Excel dates remain their numeric serial values rather than being guessed. Legacy binary .xls and password-protected workbooks receive an honest error. For help or corrections, DM @CrazyCitizen01 on X; no owner name or email is published.
or drop one here. It is read in this browser tab and never uploaded.
How does the Excel to CSV work?
1. Choose an .xlsx workbook
Drop an Excel .xlsx file or choose it from your device. The browser reads and decompresses it locally; nothing is uploaded.
2. Pick a worksheet
The first worksheet is selected by default. If the workbook contains several sheets, choose the one you want from the worksheet menu.
3. Choose a delimiter and preview
Use comma for CSV, tab for TSV, or semicolon. Check the first rows and columns before exporting.
4. Copy or download CSV
Copy the generated text to your clipboard or download a .csv file. Clear removes the workbook from this tab's memory.
Questions about Excel to CSV
- How do I convert Excel to CSV?
- Choose or drop an .xlsx workbook, select a worksheet if there is more than one, choose comma, tab, or semicolon, then press Copy CSV or Download .csv. The conversion runs in this tab with no account and no upload.
- Does this Excel to CSV converter upload my workbook?
- No. The browser reads the .xlsx ZIP, worksheet XML, and shared strings in memory. Page Utils does not receive the workbook, call a conversion API, or write it to localStorage. Clear the form or close the tab to drop it.
- Can it convert a workbook with multiple sheets?
- Yes, one worksheet at a time. The first sheet is selected by default and a worksheet picker appears when more are present. Download each sheet separately if you need several CSV files, because CSV itself cannot contain multiple sheets.
- Which Excel cell types are supported?
- The reader handles shared strings, inline strings, plain and formula-cached strings, numbers, booleans, empty cells, and sparse rows or columns. Formula cells use the last cached value saved inside the workbook; formulas are not recalculated in the browser.
- Does it support old .xls or password-protected files?
- No. This page reads modern Office Open XML .xlsx workbooks. Legacy binary .xls, encrypted or password-protected workbooks, macros, charts, and formatting are not converted. Save an old .xls as .xlsx in a spreadsheet app first.
- What happens to Excel dates and formatting?
- CSV has no cell formats. Dates stored by Excel as serial numbers are exported as those raw numbers, and display styles such as currency, colours, merged cells, and column widths are not carried over. This avoids guessing a locale or changing the underlying value.
- How are commas, quotes, and line breaks escaped?
- Fields containing the selected delimiter, a double quote, or a line break are wrapped in double quotes, and a quote inside a field is doubled. That is the standard RFC 4180 convention used by common spreadsheet and data tools.
- Is there a size limit?
- There is no server upload limit, but the workbook, decompressed XML, preview, and CSV all use device memory. Very large workbooks can slow or exhaust a browser tab; split them in a spreadsheet app if that happens.
